Debt settlement will also be considered as a taxable income by the IRS. Be aware that applying for a debt settlement will lower your credit score and it will have a negative effect in your financial history.
There are other ways to settle your debt, you can do it on your own but factor in the time that you will spend to DIY, and it may cost you more money in the long run as you there may be insider benefits that comes with debt settlement’s long standing relationship with creditors.
You can also talk to your creditors and tell them of your desire to settle your debt and if they can help you with manageable terms that you can afford. Filing for bankruptcy is another option but this should be the last resort when you want to be clear and settle your debt.
